Health and Social care students as Walsall Studio School & Sixth develop the tools, knowledge, practical skills, empathy and to increase confidence in their abilities to shape them into well rounded professionals in the world of health.
In addition to the level 2 BTEC curriculum, students will engage in our Studio plus program, in which they will learn practical skills such as first aid, communication skills, sign language and health and safety.
By studying Health with us, you will get the competitive edge when it comes to securing a fantastic career in the healthcare industry – a sector that is going from strength to strength.
The course is comprised of 3 components, all with rich content that will challenge and develop students.
Component 1: Human lifespan development. In this section, you will learn about the way people develop throughout their life stages and the factors that may affect development. Students will also be taught the ways in which health workers can support people with developmental difficulties’
Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values. This component will give you an understanding of health and social care services and will help you to understand the skills, attributes and values that are common across the sector. Students will learn about the different types of health and social care services and barriers to accessing them and learn of the skills, attributes and values required to give care.
Component 3: Health and wellbeing. Students will explore the factors that affect health and wellbeing, learning about physiological and lifestyle indicators, and person-centred approaches to make recommendations to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing.
Two hours a week will be used for the Btec curriculum and one hour per week for the studio plus program. Throughout this time, students will engage in theory and practical elements of health and social care. Students will also be required to apply this information to real life case studies and situations.

Students have gone on to study psychology, social care, mental health nursing, adult nursing and gone on to work in the care sector.
As well as studying the specialist subject you’re passionate about, it’s a legal requirement for all Key Stage 4 students to follow the National Curriculum.This means it’s mandatory that you also study:
Alongside a chosen pathway subject and Core Studies, students must also choose two more Option Subjects to equip them with a range of knowledge and skills.
