Why choose walsall studio school?

Creative Media Production at Studio School & Sixth offers two pathways – Moving image for students who want to learn how to produce video work using industry standard equipment and Interactive media for students with an interest in the digital world and want to create video games and apps.

We offer further enrichment programs which allow you to take your knowledge of coding and emerging technologies to the next level.

In Studio+, you will program the flightpaths of swarms of drones, operate robots using code and create a VR environment using Unity which you can upload to the Oculus headsets and experience your own VR world yourself.

What will I learn?

The course is structured by three components. In component 1, learners will investigate all three sectors of the media industry and how different demographics of audiences engage with media products and their purposes. Following on from this you will write an assignment investigating how interactive media products engage their audiences through the use of usability, genre, narrative, representation of people and user interfaces.

During component 2, students will learn many different skills and techniques such as animation, graphic design, image manipulation, UI design and coding using Python. These sessions will be delivered independently from each other but later combined to produce their own game.

The final component will allow learners to choose their own pathway and will produce a media product based on a brief issued by the examining board. For this assessment, learners will have to generate an idea, produce one artefact of planning and produce and edit their own media product.

How will I study?

The vocational timetable provides learners one single and one double lesson each week. At the beginning of the course, the double lessons will be used to study the component 1 material while the single session will be used to learn and practice the more practical elements such as animation and coding to prepare learners for component 2. Once component 2 is submitted, all sessions will be used to train learners in the digital applications and develop their game.

Lessons will take place in a classroom that is fully equipped with a high-end computer suite and peripherals such as two VR headsets and six programmable drones.

The theory that student learns in component 1 will be applied when producing their game in component 2 and then again later when producing their final media product in component 3.

How will I be assessed?

Learners will be assessed throughout their studies via informal activities such as mini crosswords and class quizzes. Component 1 and 2 will be assessed by your teacher and Component 3 will be assessed by the examining board.

Next Steps/ Prospects

The natural next step would be to study the T level Digital, Design and Development where students will take on a placement with a digital company and learn how to develop software and become fully immersed in the digital world. The T level qualification is recognised by employers as a valuable course to prepare students for work and also provides UCAS points for learners to continue onto university.
